The Austrian resort of Schladming won an election Thursday to host the 2013 World Ski Championships, beating out the twin resorts of Vail-Beaver Creek in the United States. Schladming, which hosted the event in 1982, was chosen by FIS, the sport's governing body, at its annual congress. The Austrian bid received 10 of the 16 votes.

Nordic combined skier Manninen retires (AP) 29/05, 18:09
Hannu Manninen of Finland retired Thursday after a career in which he won 45 individual races, more than any other Nordic combined skier. Manninen won the Nordic World Cup four straight years (2004-07). He began competing at 15 and skied for 12 years. Last season, he did not win an event and missed several races because of illness.

Austrian skier Hans Knauss, who missed the 2006 Olympics after testing positive for a steroid, settled a lawsuit in which he said a company sold him a tainted product. The lawsuit against Ultimate Nutrition was settled in federal court, said the skier's lawyer, Howard Jacobs. Details of the confidential settlement were not disclosed.
